More details on this Super Panel coming soon!

Wednesday Sustainment Super Panel
"Critical S&T Pathways for Sustainment of New and Legacy Air Force Systems"
AT 10:00 AM
Panel Objectives:

  • Create up-to-date "situational awareness" within the broad aircraft sustainment community (NASA, Services, FAA, DoD, Military and Commercial Aviation Industry) of the significant recent Air Force developments in the arena.
  • Outline specific recommendations on strategy, process and programs to stimulate sustainment community collaboration in the many areas of mutual interest.
  • Create a short list of actionable outcomes for follow-up implementation or more detailed definition of implementation pathways by stakeholders in government, industry and academia.

Panel Scope:

A number of recent developments across the broad "aging aircraft" arena within the Air Force have helped shape and focus both policy and technical opportunities, to improve life cycle management of the legacy fleets and new systems. These developments include:

  • Re-activation of the Air Force Sustainment Arena Applied Technology Council (ATC) and Improvements in the AFMC Sustainment Technology Process (STP)
  • Proposed AFMC Re-Organization to restructure acquisition, sustainment and life cycle management functions of new and legacy fleets
  • Findings and Recommendations developed by three recent AF Blue Ribbon Panels
    • AFMC Headquarters/AFRL Grey Beard Panel – Air Force Sustainment Technology Transition
    • AF Scientific Advisory Board – Sustaining Air Force Aging Aircraft into the 21st Century
    • National Academies – AF Studies Board – Air Force Aircraft Sustainment Needs and Strategy
  • AF/AQ sponsored Corrosion Forum
  • New AFRL S&T Requirements/Capability Development Processes - AF Core Functions
  • SAF/IE Legacy Fleet Assessment – Fuel/Energy saving opportunities

The panel will summarize and assess the principal themes from all these developments and outline possible specific strategy, planning and programming recommendations to address key technology challenges in a constrained resource environment. While the panel's principal focus will be on the near and mid-term, reflecting the sustainer's principal time domain of interest, pathways to longer-term, higher risk (but higher payoff) approaches will also be considered. Because diverse stakeholder communities must work effectively together to establish actionable requirements and identify, develop and implement credible new capability solutions; the panel will also access important sustainment technology processes and process improvements with possible enduring impact.
